PREA Initiative

It is the policy of the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center (SVJC) to provide a safe, humane, and secure environment for all residents. The agency administers a program of education, prevention, detection, response, investigation and tracking of all reported acts of sexual assault. Punishment for the perpetrator is enforced. The program provides treatment for the victim and the perpetrator and includes ongoing support for the victim. In addition to a program regarding resident-on-resident sexual assault, the agency also provides education to residents and staff regarding staff sexual misconduct and harassment. During the admission process, all residents are provided information about sexual assault, to include: prevention/intervention, self protection, reporting sexual assault, treatment and counseling.

The Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center maintains a zero tolerance for resident-on-resident sexual assault, staff sexual misconduct and sexual harassment toward offenders. Every allegation of sexual assault, misconduct and harassment is thoroughly investigated.

SVJC conducts administrative investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct. All criminal investigations are completed by the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office. Investigations may be completed by any combination of the following agencies: Shenandoah Valley Department of Social Services, Department of Juvenile Justice, Augusta County Sheriff's Department, Virginia State Police, Office of the Inspector General, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Augusta County Commonwealth Attorney.

To make sure that sexual misconduct is reported, the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center has several ways for parents and third parties to report. You may use the reporting method with which you are most comfortable.

  • Tell any staff member at the center. It is part of their job to report any allegation, ensure the resident’s safety, and maintain confidentiality.

  • Send a letter to the Executive Director, Deputy Director, or Program Manager at the center.

  • Send a letter to the Department of Juvenile Justice, Child Protective Services, or Augusta County Sheriff's Office.

  • Call the Executive Director, Deputy Director, Security Manager, Department of Juvenile Justice, Child Protective Services, or Augusta County Sheriff's Office.
