Shelter & Assessment Center
The Shelter and Assessment Center is designed to provide short-term, less secure,residential placement.
The purpose of the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Shelter and Assessment Center is to:
- Provide a safe residential environment in which children at risk of being removed from their home, or who have already been removed from their home, can be evaluated for services;
- On a space available basis, provide short-term placement for a child pursuant to Virginia Code Section 16.1-251, Emergency removal order (Attachment A), or Virginia Code Section 16.1-252, Preliminary removal order (Attachment B); and 3.On a space available basis, provide short-term shelter care for children pursuant to Virginia Code Section 16.1-248.1B, Criteria for detention or shelter care (Attachment C).
Service Demographics
- Males (maximum 10 at a time) ages 12-17 who meet the above listed requirements and who are not experiencing any of the exclusionary criteria.
- Females (maximum 10 at a time) ages 12-17 who meet the above listed requirements and who are not experiencing any of the exclusionary criteria.
Service Region
Priority for placement will be given to children from those jurisdictions who are participating members of the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Detention Commission. Placement will be given to children from non-participating members on a space available basis.
Exclusionary Criteria
The following children will not be accepted into the Shelter and Assessment Center.
- children experiencing substance withdrawal; or children with active psychosis;
- children with multiple or severe disabilities requiring 1 to 1 supervision;
- children with a fever of unknown origin;
- children with active tuberculosis;
- children on dialysis;
- children on a ventilator;
- children using a catheter;
- children in their third trimester of pregnancy;
- children who are terminally ill; or
- children refusing to comply with program rules and regulations
